Andy Sachs: No, no, nothing. Y'know, it's just that both those belts look exactly the same to me. Y'know, I'm still learning about all this stuff.

Miranda Presley: This... 'stuff'? Oh... ok. I see, you think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don't know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise, it's not lapis, it's actually cerulean. You're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar De La Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves St Laurent, wasn't it, who showed cerulean military jackets? I think we need a jacket here. And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of 8 different designers. Then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic casual corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and so it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of stuff.

This is an update on my first challenge on Imagineering Style's ROAD TO FASHION WEEK:

I created 4 different garments for the African Tribal Challenge before I could be 100% satisfied with a winning look. I shared my Indiana Jones inspired look with you before; however, I chose a different piece to compete on this first challenge.

This winner look is inspired on Isis, the goddess of love from the Egyptian mythology, and on ancient Egypt's most iconic visual elements: the amazing pyramids, the impressive sarcophagus of the pharaohs, and the ubiquitous hieroglyphs and their rich colors.

A tribal look is about geometric shapes and patterns and all that adorn. By manipulating plain fabric, I created my own pattern which takes most characteristics of the pyramids of Giza when seen directly from above. For example, the different faces of a pyramid take on different color, shade, or dimension depending on the position you look at it from, and the position of the sun or source of illumination in relation to the pyramid. I feel as if this garment has a life of its own and takes new characteristics depending on the time of the day, lighting, angles, etc.

Furthermore, my choice of colors are by themselves synonym of ancient Egypt and its papyrus painting. I can already envision my model, Joy, walking down the runway looking like the incarnation of Isis into Nefertiti, who was just awakened and raised up wearing part of her sarcophagus.

This look was made for Melania Trump. She will wear it to a charity event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Temple of Dendur where she will meet with a world-renowned antique and fine arts broker.

Edixon Valdez

Edixon Valdez was born in the Dominican Republic and has lived in the United States since age 17. As a kid, I loved picking up retazos (pieces) of leftover colorful fabrics from a sac that my seamstress aunt Tilin used to lock away. With those retazos, he made crafts: decorated jars, cans, etc. But most important to Edixon, he began his creative career in designing, and started making hand-made dresses for younger cousin dolls.

But his passion was not allowed to flourish so after graduating from Plattsburgh State University of New York with a Bachelor Degree of Arts in Hospitality, Edixon began his employ with Trump International Hotel & Tower in New York City. He longed for his first love fashion, so he enrolled in a sewing and pattern making class at New York’s infamous Fashion Institute of Technology.

Edixon caught the Fashion Bug and proceeded in creating his first collection for men through sportswear and for women with eveningwear.

Fashion and Politics

The museum is right on the corner of 27th and 7th and it is open Tue-Fri noon to 8pm and Sat. 10am to 5pm.

About the "Bias Cut" Garments

Garments cut on the bias are given special value/attention because of two main reasons. One is that they are more flattering to the wearer's figure because the fabric drapes in an easy, flowy, graceful way and clings to the body and follows its contours; The garment reacts to the wearer's body movements in a more expressive way. The other reason is that it is much harder to work on the bias, which basically means the fabric is used (cut) diagonally instead of cutting it in top-to-bottom direction (length grain). It takes more technical abilities to create a bias cut garment than it takes to create one in the conventional length grain. It is much harder to maintain nice and straight seams and hems and make the garment sit proportionately on the wearer. Ladies, please be biased about your garments' cut!

On NEW YORK Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week, recently branded Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, is a semiannual fashion week held in New York City. It is one of four major fashion weeks in the fashion industry. The Spring 2009 Fashion Week was held Sept. 5 –12, 2008. The Fall 2009 Fashion Week was held Feb. 13 - 20 2009.
The first New York Fashion Week in 1943, then called Press Week, was the world's first organized fashion week.In 1993, the event was moved to its current site in Bryant Park. Due to increasing pressure from Bryant Park management, New York Fashion week will be hosted in Damrosch Park at the Lincoln Center starting in 2010.

It is my opinion that after getting used to the name BRYANT PARK (which for anyone in the world of fashion became synonym for Fashion Week), a name like DAMROSCH PARK would be hard to welcome. Should they call it LINCOLN PARK instead? It is the Lincoln Center After all!

At this point, I wanted to include both of my first names. To my family and hometown people in The Dominican Republic, I am Paholo. Everyone else knows me for the name Edixon.
I will revisit this logo in the future, when I am ready to offer a lifestyle brand to include goods and services beyond fashion.

At this point, I had decided to just focus on a Women Couture/Evening wear clothing line under Paholo Santana (My middle name and my grandmother's last name.

This is where I am right now. Men sportswear/women evening wear. Changed to Edixon Valdez for legal reasons. The logo choice was between a Cameo (as in cameo brooch) or a chandelier. Although I love chandeliers, I decided for the Cameo because I believe it is very Iconic.

Thanks to my brother, Deivid Valdez, for putting up with my changes.

Edixon Valdez for Hermes: -For my end of semester project (Pattern Making 1) I chose to pay homage to the French brand Hermes, whose "formal tailoring is always exquisite; casual clothing is no less luxurious, yet often offered in luscious colour combinations and given subtly ironic details" (hint: H). I chose to make separates (Skirt and Top that come together nicely to spell an H for Hermes through blocking and contrasting colors (muslin). When I showed my proposal (sketch) to my teacher for approval, she did not like it and hinted that I should think about something else; however, I stuck to it and she really liked the end results. My Classmates liked it too. The requisites were to include at least 6 elements of design learnt throughout the semester. For example: Yoke, Flare, Puff Sleeve, Button/Button hole, etc.

On Manga:

Mangas are Japanese comics and printed cartoons. Literally translated, Manga means Whimsical pictures. They include a wide range of subjects from mystery to sexuality and romance. In Japan, mangas are read widely by people of all ages. Among the most popular or familiar mangas are: Astro Boy, Arika, One piece, Bleach, Naruto, Fullmetal alchemist, Fruits Basket, and Dragonball.

In the US, people refer to manga-like comics as Amerimanga. In France they call it La Nouvelle Manga. In my case, I didn't learn about the word manga in its comics meaning until about 8 months ago, when I was brainstorming for a name for this collection. Since I am telling a story through the shirts and using images to tell it, my research headed in the direction of comic books, and I learned about Manga and thought: what a great idea. When trying to define the characteristics of my designing and creating force, certain words come to mind: Syncretism, Eclectic, ambiguity, ying/yang... Not purely one thing, but a mix. Having said this, it was no surprise that I started to play around with the word and find all the different connections and arrived at Manga Americana: Manga is a story through graphics, but it also is the Spanish word for sleeve, I am telling the story through iconic images from American culture, hence Americana (in Spanish, which could read as American Sleeve (the sleeves are a key feature in the shirts (they can be snapped on or off the shirt)), or it could read American Manga (as in a comics (Japanese))).

Manga Americana (The Vest): Edixon Valdez -Men Spring/Summer '10 Collection Preview

letf: (from EPISODE 11) cotton vest with silk American flag on model Joseph Mccrea. -"The Vest" (Manga Americana edition) was born about a year ago, product of my excitement for sewing my first garment after starting Sewing I and Pattern making I classes at the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in NYC. The original inspiration for the structure came from my childhood memories; it was my favirite shirt brought back to me in the Dominican Republic by my mother from New York on one of her "volver a mi pueblo" trips. I have been working on the collection since then and all I can say is that it's been a pleasure and a learning experience. I would describe it as Men Couture Sportswear. Its focus is mainly to showcase the innovative and stylish design twist given to the simple staple t-shirt. I propose its design to be the new staple in sports shirts because it provides all the comfort of our traditional t-shirt plus more functionality (un-snap the side seams, and you've got yourself a towel to lay on the beach or a scarf during winter. The collection has a very 3-D look and plenty of interesting details and fresh design elements. Innovative design is the main motor that moves my style while taking reference from everyday overlooked elements and triviality. The Manga Americana collection narrates a story through graphics in the way of a Japanese Manga (comic book); I learned (through TIME magazine) to call it a Capote-like nonfiction novel.
